Poole Named LTLT Volunteer of the Year
In a brief ceremony
in June, Land Trust for the Little Tennessee (LTLT) member Steve
Poole was awarded LTLT’s first Volunteer of the Year Award
in recognition of his valuable contributions to LTLT’s Land
Stewardship Program and to the ecological health and sustainability
of the Little Tennessee River valley. Since moving from Atlanta
to the Needmore area in 2005, Steve and his wife Dorothy have been
very active community members, participating not only in numerous
LTLT Volunteer Stewardship workdays on LTLT properties, but also
annual Needmore cleanups and Little Tennessee Watershed Association
stream monitoring events.
The Pooles have also adopted a portion of Needmore Road, maintaining
it free of trash. “I enjoy volunteer work because it’s
a great way to meet people, stay involved in the community, and
it’s an opportunity to give back,” says Steve. According
to LTLT’s Land Stewardship Coordinator, Dennis Desmond, “LTLT
has been blessed with a strong group of volunteers over the past
few years, among which Steve has been one of the most active, helping
with tree planting, trash cleanup, invasive exotic plant control,
and other activities where we’ve needed help. This award is
designed not only to recognize the tremendous volunteer efforts
such as his, but also inspire others to participate.”
Through its
Land Stewardhip Program, the Land Trust for the Little Tennessee
works to restore the landscape through the demonstration of sustainable
forestry, agriculture, stream and riparian restoration, and wildlife
habitat management practices on lands it owns and works to promote
these practices with private landowners. If you would like more
