Our
area is changing rapidly and the next several decades could
see the primarily rural valleys converted to large areas of
suburban sprawl. Today many thoughtful residents worry that
within another generation there may be little farmland left
in the county and the local rural heritage that we all so
deeply cherish may be irretrievably lost.
Ever-rising
land prices will put increasing pressure on future property
owners to subdivide much of the remaining farm and private
forest land into small lots. Given this uncertain future,
owners today who believe that their land should remain largely
intact for farm, forest, wildlife, or other uses need to look
at the options available to them for conserving their land.
